DECO RATIN G
R o o m t o C o c o o n
A bedroom is so much more than a sleeping space. It’s a
prime candidate for a quiet retreat—a special place for a
mom’s time-out. Picking a new paint color (keep it serene)
and rearranging the furniture can give any room a fresh
outlook. In this small space, placing the bed against the
window (usually a rule-breaker) works because of the
latticework headboard that lets light in and canopy
curtains that give a sense of enclosure.
ALL iS CALM
Quiet colors set the stage
for relaxation. Although
there are several different
patterned fabrics, all are in
pale shades of blue and tan
so the mix isn’t overbearing.
The boldest pattern—
paisley shades on bedside
lamps— is just a small dose.
SOFT SANCTUARY
Damask panels hung from
the ceiling drape the bed
corners, creating a space-
saving canopy. Shams and a
bolster make the bed plush.
CORNER COMFORT
With a few simple additions,
an unused corner (alcove or
not) becomes a cozy
reading nook. Here, baskets
filled with books maintain
order in stackable cubbies.
Lay a little rug to mark your
turf, then pull up a seat. This
old chair was refreshed with
paint, a new cushion, and a
pillow— less expensive than
reupholstering.
